CABLE CAM SYSTEMS FAQ

Choosing JoyMechanix equipment type: which camera motion system fits your working range

Start with your venue and the movement you need - full 3D flight, long 1D travel, or controlled studio motion on a crane or rail. This guide helps you shortlist the right JoyMechanix system and explains the shared ecosystem features like fiber signal transport, optional AR tracking, and synchronized stabilized head control.

Article Scope

This article provides a practical overview of JoyMechanix equipment categories by venue scale and motion type to help you shortlist a system. It summarizes typical use cases and shared capabilities (fiber signal, AR readiness, unified control of rig and head). It does not replace a site survey, structural/rigging engineering review, payload and geometry calculations, or a formal quotation.

What equipment do we have at JoyMechanix?

We divide all cable cam systems into two main groups based on working range:
  • Up to 130 meters
  • Above 130 meters

Systems for Working Zones Above 130 meters

4-Point Systems (3D)

These are full three-dimensional flying camera systems used for large-scale productions.
JM 2.3 Universal System
  • Designed for working zones up to ~250 meters diagonal
  • Most commonly used for sports events (e.g. football stadiums)
  • Standard choice for rental applications in large venues
JM 3.3 Industry System
  • Designed for extended range applications
  • Can operate up to 600–800 meters diagonal depending on payload
  • Used for film production and special projects requiring very large coverage

1D High-Speed System

Sailfish
  • Point-to-point (1D) motion system
  • Designed for ultra-long distances
  • Can operate over 1.5 kilometers or even more
  • Reaches speeds up to 130 km/h
  • Used where extreme speed and long travel distance are required

Systems for Working Zones Up to 130 meters

4-Point Studio System (3D)

JM 1.3 Studio System
  • Standard working zone up to ~100 meters diagonal
  • Extendable up to ~130 meters
  • Can be used in a wide range of environments, from very small studios (as small as 3×5 meters) to larger venues like partial stadium setups
  • Highly versatile and widely used by rental companies

Cranes (Motion-Controlled)

  • Fixed-length systems with full motion control
  • Can be:
Ground-based
Ceiling-mounted
Rail-mounted (ceiling or ground)
  • Ideal for studio environments where space efficiency is important
  • Provide multiple axes of movement through rotation, tilt, and travel

Rail Cam Systems (1D)

  • Ground-based or ceiling-based
  • Point-to-point (1D) motion systems
  • Used for controlled linear movement in studio or compact environments

Shared Features Across All Systems

  1. Fiber-optic connectivity for seamless signal transmission
  2. AR integration (optional add-on), often implemented after initial system purchase
  3. Proprietary gimbal system:
  • Fully synchronized with motion control
  • Compatible across all system types
  • Enables lens control directly through the gimbal
  • Provides stabilization, AR compatibility, and unified control
All systems are designed to work within a fully integrated motion environment, allowing combined movement of the rig and camera system, including pre recorded moves.
